Spider veins are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin and appear blue, red, or purple in color. Although these veins are part of the larger venous system, they are not essential and may be removed. Varicose veins differ from spider veins in significant ways. Varicose veins are larger than spider veins. They tend to bulge and are darker in color. They can be painful and may indicate more serious disorders of the veins.

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical medical procedure to effectively treat spider veins and small varicose veins in the legs. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to collapse, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins. The procedure does not require anesthesia and usually takes 15 minutes to an hour to complete depending on the condition of the veins. After sclerotherapy, treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take one to two months to see the full results. In some instances, several sclerotherapy treatments may be needed.
