Sunlight and Pollution: A Dangerous Combination for Our Skin

The combination of sunlight and pollution can have a negative impact on the skin. The rays from the sun are categorized into UVA and UVB rays. These rays cause damage in different ways. UVB rays are mostly responsible for causing sunburns, dark skin, freckles, and dark spots. UVA radiation penetrates farther into the skin than UVB rays. UVA rays are the leading cause of long term skin damage, aging and wrinkles, and a major contributor to skin cancer.

Protecting the Skin from Sunlight

Protecting your skin from the harsh effects of the sun is important for reducing the effects of aging and skin cancer.

  • Apply an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure.
  • Reapply sunscreen after bathing, swimming, or exercising.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if outdoors for an extended period of time.
  • Use protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses.
  • Seek shade whenever possible.
  • Avoid the sun during the hours of 10.00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Don’t assume windows will provide protection. Even in cars, UVA rays can penetrate the glass.
  • Nourish the skin with a moisturizer.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables that contain beta carotenes, such as pumpkin, rice, and carrots.
